Mel DeFlorio

Mel DeFlorio is an accomplished financial aid administrator with over 12 years of experience.  He joined FAS in 2022, after serving as director of financial aid at Norwich University in VT.  Mel provides Interim Staffing, Consulting, and Assessment services to help FAS’ clients meet their goals for enrollment, compliance, cash flow, and student service.

Working his way through the financial aid ranks, Mel began his career as a financial aid advisor.  Over the years, Mel moved up to associate director, director, and senior director of financial aid positions. His depth of financial aid knowledge grew as he took increasing levels of responsibility and handled more complex financial aid issues, such as state and federal reporting, preparing for annual audits, and completing the Fiscal Operations Report and Application to Participate (FISAP).  Along with his financial aid background, Mel brings years of experience in enrollment management.

Mel has served as senior director for enrollment management, director of financial aid, and online enrollment at Vermont Law School.  During his time with Vermont Law School, he led the internal review of the institution’s admissions requirements.  This resulted in expanding the School’s reach and created better representation among key student demographics.

Since starting at FAS, Mel has provided institutions with various levels of support, from completing annual FISAP reporting, Professional Judgment reviews, Counseling services, HCM2 claim reviews, PowerFAIDS report building, PowerFAIDS training, updating Policy and Procedure manuals, and reconciliation.

Mel is familiar with several financial aid and student information systems, including Ellucian Banner and College Board’s PowerFAIDS.  He has also utilized the U.S. Department of Education’s suite of websites and platforms for administering Title IV Federal Student Aid.

Throughout his career, Mel has been in involved in the Eastern Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators (EASFAA).  This includes several years serving on the association’s Training Committee.  Mel has presented on a variety of financial aid topics at EASFAA’s Annual Conference, and the Regional Training Meeting held throughout New England.

Mel holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College (MA) and a Master of Business Administration from Norwich university.
